Immobilisers are one of the cheapest ways to stop that from happening. But the word covers several different technologies, and most guides are written for someone protecting one car on a driveway, not an operator running twenty vehicles across multiple drivers. The problem immobilisers solve for fleets
Fleet theft rarely looks like a smashed window and a hotwire anymore. Modern thieves clone key signals, use relay attacks to fool keyless entry, or simply walk off with a spare key that a driver left in the office.
Fleets also face a problem private owners do not: unauthorised use. A driver taking a vehicle out overnight, a returned rental that goes missing, or a car being moved without a job assigned to it. All of these cost you money and none of them are solved by a factory alarm.
An immobiliser stops the vehicle from starting or moving unless the right conditions are met. That is the whole idea. The differences come down to how it decides who is allowed to drive.
What a vehicle immobiliser actually does
At its simplest, an immobiliser breaks one of the circuits a car needs to run. That could be the ignition, the fuel system, or the starter. Without the correct trigger, turning the key or pressing start does nothing.
Every car sold in the UK since the late 1990s has a basic factory immobiliser built in. It talks to a chip in your key. The main types of immobiliser
Ghost immobiliser
A ghost immobiliser connects to the car’s internal network and requires a PIN sequence before the engine will start. Instead of a keypad, it uses buttons the car already has, on the steering wheel, doors, or centre console. You press the right buttons in the right order, and only then will the vehicle start.
The appeal is that it is hidden and gives off no signal. There is nothing for a thief to clone or jam, and no sign the system is even fitted. Even a thief sitting in the seat with a cloned key gets nowhere without the sequence.
The catch for fleets is practical. A PIN sequence works for one owner and one car. Managing dozens of sequences across a rotating pool of drivers is a different job, which is where the next options come in.
Relay immobiliser
A relay immobiliser interrupts an electrical circuit through a relay, so the engine cannot start while it is active. The key difference is that a relay type can be switched on and off by an external signal rather than a manual code.
That makes it the building block for fleet-grade security, because the relay can be armed automatically or triggered from a control system rather than depending on a driver remembering anything.
Remote immobiliser
A remote immobiliser is a relay type wired into a connected device, so you can arm or release it from a dashboard rather than from inside the car. This is the version built for fleets. Remote immobilisation means you can stop a vehicle wherever it is, without needing anyone physically present.
That single capability changes what you can do when something goes wrong. A vehicle reported stolen can be grounded before it leaves the city. A driver who has not returned a car can be locked out. A rental that has overrun can be disabled until payment clears.
Why remote control matters more than the hardware
Any decent immobiliser will slow a thief down. What separates a fleet solution is what happens in the minutes after you realise there is a problem.
With remote immobilisation, the flow looks like this:
- A vehicle is being taken or used without authorisation.
- You trigger the immobiliser from the dashboard, from anywhere.
- The vehicle cannot start, and you get an alert the moment someone tries.
- Once the situation is resolved, you re-enable it remotely. No callout, no engineer.

Driver ID tags: control who moves what

Insurance and compliance
Immobilisers can support lower premiums, but the detail matters. Whether that earns you a discount depends entirely on your insurer, so it is always worth asking them directly before you fit anything.
For licensed work, fitment quality also matters. A properly installed system should be hardwired discreetly, tamper resistant, and compliant with the requirements of your licensing authority. If you run taxi or PHV vehicles, check that any system you fit meets TfL or your local authority standards and does not interfere with existing equipment.

- Professional installation. A hidden, hardwired fit is far harder to find and remove than a plug-in device.
