All figures are estimates. Vehicle efficiency figures are rated/manufacturer values and optimistic against real-world driving. Temperature, road type multipliers and the real-world derate are approximations. Always confirm the current HMRC AER rates at gov.uk and your actual charging costs before submitting a claim. Claims are subject to employer approval and HMRC rules.
Frequently asked questions
How the two-tier AER works
HMRC's Advisory Electric Rate (AER) allows company car drivers in fully electric vehicles to claim a mileage rate for business journeys without it being treated as a taxable benefit. Unlike petrol and diesel rates, the AER has two tiers depending on where the car was charged.
Home charging attracts the lower rate because domestic electricity costs less per kWh than public charge points. Public charging — whether rapid, fast or slow — qualifies for the higher rate, reflecting the typically higher unit cost at public infrastructure.
You can mix home and public legs within a single journey. This tool lets you add as many legs as you need and assigns the correct rate to each one automatically.
